School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)

What is SWPBS?

SWPBS is a framework that focuses on teaching and reinforcing expected behaviours in all areas of the school. By clearly defining, teaching, and acknowledging positive behaviours, we aim to create a safe and supportive environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Behaviour Matrix

Monbulk College’s Behaviour Matrix outlines the positive behaviours expected of all students at Monbulk College. Developed collaboratively by our staff, students, parents/carers and the local community, it reflects our shared commitment to creating a safe, respectful and inclusive learning environment. Built around our College values of Respect, Excellence and Responsibility, the Behaviour Matrix provides clear, consistent expectations across all areas of the school. By explicitly teaching and positively reinforcing these behaviours, we help every student understand what success looks like and support them to thrive both at school and beyond.

Minor & Major Behaviours

As part of the SWPBS framework, we have categorised behaviours into two groups:

  • Minor Behaviours are less serious and typically handled by the classroom teacher or staff member present, which we see are learning opportunities.
  • Major Behaviours are more serious and may require intervention from a Team Leader or leadership staff member.

For minor behaviours you will receive an email notification. Additionally, you will receive an SMS if your child is late to class, did not bring the correct equipment to class, misuse of technology or out of class without a pass. For major behaviours you will receive an email notification and then a follow up phone conversation which will provide more details.

Entry & Exit Routines

At Monbulk College, we know that the first and last few minutes of every lesson matter. Our consistent Entry and Exit Routines help create calm, purposeful classrooms where students feel settled, ready to learn and able to make the most of every lesson. From positive greetings and clear learning intentions to reflection and orderly dismissal, these routines maximise learning time and create predictable, supportive learning environments. Predictable routines strengthen students' sense of safety, belonging and wellbeing by providing clear expectations, reducing uncertainty and helping every student feel valued and included.

How You Can Support SWPBS at Home

We value the important role families play in supporting positive behaviour. You can assist by:

  • Discussing the school’s expectations with your child.
  • Encouraging respectful and responsible behaviour at home and in the community.
  • Reinforcing the importance of making positive choices and learning from mistakes.

Acknowledging Positive Behaviour

An integral part of SWPBS is recognising and celebrating students who consistently demonstrate our school’s expectations. This might include verbal praise, certificates, or special privileges. By focusing on positive reinforcement, we aim to motivate all students to contribute to a positive school culture. Students can spend their points at the SWPBS Shop.
