The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning is an education and training certificate focused on applied learning.
Students who complete the Applied Learning Certificate will have a number of options, including further study through training in TAFE, an Apprenticeship or Traineeship, University or other employment.
VCAL students will undertake programs made up of the following compulsory curriculum strands:
- Literacy and Numeracy
- Industry Specific Skills (TAFE and VET Studies)
- Work Related Skills
- Personal Development Skills
There are two VCAL levels at Monbulk College - Intermediate and Senior - so that learning programs can be designed at the appropriate level for each student. The Senior VCAL certificate is considered as an equivalent to Year 12 VCE however, the students do not receive an ATAR score.
The VCAL can be completed in one year at any one level, or longer if required. Students who successfully complete their full learning program will receive a VCAL certificate at the end of each level of their program. The certificate will state whether the VCAL program completed was at Intermediate or Senior level.
Students will be expected to participate in the workplace from 1 to 2 days per week throughout the year, depending on their course of study. VCAL courses will be individually designed through an interview process with students, parents and the VCAL Team Leader.
The College offers a number of Australian School Based Apprenticeships to students. Under this scheme, students spend two days per week at school, one day per week at TAFE and up to two days per week in the workplace over two-years. On completion of the two-year School Based Apprenticeship, students will have completed their VCAL and gained a nationally recognised traineeship in their chosen industry, with most students gaining full-time employment or an apprenticeship. However, it is possible to undertake another training program, enter into Diploma level courses at TAFE or continue to University in some industries.
Please contact Ellen McDonald if you have any questions about the VCAL program at Monbulk College.
Please note that changes to the VCE Certificate will occur 2023. The new VCE will incorporate an applied learning certificate similar to the current VCAL. VCAL will run as described above in 2022 for Year 11 and Year 12.
